The dragon roll is a perfect make-at-home meal. If you’re feeling particularly adventurous, you can add to the presentation by creating a dragon roll that actually looks like a miniature tasty dragon.

Items you will need include:

  • Bamboo sushi mat
  • Plastic wrap

Ingredients you will need for the dragon roll include:

Toppings:

  • Spicy Mayo
  • Unagi Sauce
  • Black sesame seeds (optional)

Vinegar water for dipping hands (Tezu):

  • ¼ cup water
  • 2 tsp. rice vinegar

Follow these steps to assemble your dragon sushi roll:

  1. Carve the cucumber into long slices
  2. Cut the avocado in half and then cut one of the halves into long strips
  3. Cut the other avocado half into half again to make quarters, and then make thin slices from both
  4. Place half a nori sheet on the sushi mat
  5. Gently arrange an even layer of sushi rice to cover the nori, being careful not to compress the rice.
  6. Flip the rice-covered nori sheet over on the sushi mat so the nori is facing up
  7. Place the avocado strips, cucumber sticks alongside the nori
  8. Place the shrimp tempura on top of the other fillings. Make sure that one shrimp has the tail sticking out on one end of the roll.
  9. Take another shrimp tempura to fill the other side. If it’s too long, cut to fit.
  10. Using the sushi mat, roll your sushi to make an inside-out roll (rice on the outside)

Place the avocado slices to appear like dragon scales on top of the inside-out roll, and then place a cutting guide on top of your roll to create even slices. Using a teaspoon, distribute some massago  on the roll.

Align your sushi in a slightly slivery shape of a dragon, and complete its transformation to dragon roll dragon using roe to create tiny dragon eyes and carrot slivers for antennae!
